Cooking Cinema: Ponyo's Ham Ramen
Everything seems a little more magical on the movie screen, especially the food. We’re excited to help you bring a little of that magic into your own kitchen with our new series “Cooking Cinema”, where we recreate noodle dishes from famous films. We decided to start with Ponyo’s Ham Ramen, a cozy classic, and bring that animated deliciousness to life.
For those who haven’t experienced the magic of Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo, the chewy ramen noodles are bathed in steaming broth and topped with thick slices of tender ham, fragrant green onions, and a soft-boiled egg. The best part? It's as simple as it is delicious, ready to eat with just four ingredients! We had a lot of fun recreating this classic dish and let our imaginations wander about what else we could bring to life (Krabby Patties were a big hit!). Follow along with us in our video recipe below or scroll down for the written version.
Instead of using ham, we thought spam would be an easier but just-as-tasty substitute (feel free to use whatever protein you’d like!). On the topic of toppings, we recommend long, thinly sliced tofu as a delicious and similar non-meat option for our vegan and vegetarian friends.
We used Tainan Thin noodles in this recipe, as they bear the closest resemblance to the movie’s ramen. Unlike conventional ramen, however, our noodles are air-dried for 18 hours, making them healthier than conventional deep-fried ramen options. Did we mention they contain 11g of plant-based protein to ensure you have a filling and nutritious meal? Our premium-quality noodles turn this piece of movie magic into a truly gourmet meal.
This recipe is simple and stress-free. We started by doing a bit of prep: cooking the egg and slicing the spam. After that, we cooked the noodles and heated the broth as the spam sizzled. Once the noodles were done, we added our toppings and garnished, and got ready to eat!
These delicious noodles are perfect for busy weeknights when you crave a comforting, savory meal ready in minutes. We love it best paired with your favorite comfort night and your loved ones. We can’t wait for you to try this cozy classic that promises to warm your stomach (and your heart!).

Ponyo Ham Ramen Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 Tainan Thin Noodles with Original Soy Sauce
- 1 egg hard or soft boiled
- 1 green onion sliced
- 2 pieces of Spam
- ½ cup of chicken broth (or veggie broth)
Instructions:
- From the Spam can, cut off two pieces and set them aside.
- On a medium-hot pan, add your two pieces of spam. When they are mostly cooked, add half of the sauce packet from the Tainan Thin Noodles with Soy Sauce pack. Let it cook until it reaches a crispy texture.
- Prep the ingredients: Hard or soft boil the egg and cut it in half, then slice the green onions.
- Boil water on the stove and add one pack of Tainan Thin noodles. Cook based off package instructions.
- Place the ramen noodles in a bowl. To keep your noodles from sticking, we recommend soaking them in ice water.
- Add ½ cup of broth to a pot and mix in the other half of the sauce packet. Turn off the pot once the broth is boiling.
- Once the broth is done, add both noodles and broth to a bowl.
- Top with half of the egg, sliced green onion, and the spam.
